Style Tips: Boy’s Bedrooms

When designing kid spaces, I always think the majority of the room––walls, bed, dresser, nightstand, chair, rug, lighting, etc.–– should feel a little more mature and grown up. I have never been a fan of the typical kid bedroom covered in trucks or unicorns. I think there is a way to marry the two by purchasing more adult or timeless pieces while still incorporating fun & youthful decor items. My biggest piece of advice: invest in dressers, nightstands and beds (even rugs) that will work and transition with your kids as they grow. When I found the vintage rug in Guy’s room, I fell in love and could justify the price because I know I’ll have it forever. You can never have too many vintage rugs in any space!

When my oldest, Sennet, outgrew his crib, we invested in nice bunk beds. I knew we would end up passing the bunk beds down to a younger sibling when he was ready for a double or queen size bed, which is exactly what we did when Guy (my youngest) outgrew his crib. Guy loves having bunkbeds and he is always asking Beaux and Sennet to have sleepovers in his room.

Guy’s dresser is actually a media console that we had in a different space of our house. I love that the piece is shorter so he is able to easily access everything inside. If the lack of storage ever becomes an issue, we will purchase a bigger dresser and transition that same console in our guest bedroom. Justifying the price of good quality furniture is a lot easier when you know you will continue to re-use each piece. I scored that vintage lamp at a flea market with my BFF. It was my first flea market purchase years ago. I couldn’t find the exact Organic Modernism console in Guy’s room but here’s a similar console and a few lookalike lamps below-

Purchase decor that is more youthful and fun so your kids feel like the space is theirs. Bedding, art, and book or toy displays are easy ways to do this and they are more affordable to update when necessary.
